What is Segregation?

Segregation is a very important thing to know. And if you don’t know what it means, well, I am going to tell you. Segregation is the action of setting someone or something apart from other people. Segregation just means separation between types of people, specifically between whites and blacks. States would make laws that legally separated the races! And the Civil rights Movement falls right into this category.

What was the Civil Rights Movement?

The Civil Rights Movement is just an organized effort to get what they want, which in most cases it would be to be treated equally and to have the right to vote. They just want to treated like other humans would be treated.

What is Dockum? What is the “Sit In”?

A sit in is a form of protest in which demonstrators occupy a place , refusing to leave until they get what they want. The Sit In is were a group of people (African Americans, Asians, Females Males, etc.) go where they are not aloud and sit their until they get what they want. What was the goal? The goal was to end racial segregation and discrimination.

What happened at Dockum?

In Dockum Drug Store in Wichita they refused to serve African Americans at the counter. If they wished to purchase anything from the counter they had to go to the end of the counter and take it to go. So this is where the “Sit In” comes in. A group of African-Americans then came in and sat there until they were served. They got beat up, thrown out, sent to the hospital even. And when one person leaves another person comes and sits. Eventually, the counter realized that they are not making any money do they decided to serve African-Americans.
