Satanta’s original name was Set-t’ainte or “White Bear” as a child. (The whites
Anglicized the name to ‘Satanta.) When he was a boy he was sent out in the wilderness. By the age of 20, he married and started a family. After Satanta passed into manhood his father (Chief Red Tipi) still kept a close eye on Satanta.
At the age of 20 he was made a sub-chieftain after he made a reputation for himself a great warrior. The chief at the time was Chief Dohasan. Satanta fought with Chief Dohasan at the battle of “Adobe Walls,” and Chief Dohasan used an army bugle to confuse his enemies. Santantas speaking abilities gained him the title of "Orator of the Plains," and he negotiated several treaties with the government, like the “Little Arkansas Treaty” in 1865 and the “Medicine Lodge Treaty” in 1867. The treaties promised them that they would not go into their lands set aside for them but the settlers went in and settled anyway.

In response to the settlers violating the previous treaties Setanta went and raided settlements that were on his land and killed everything - even the children! In October 1874 he was captured and taken to prison in Texas. In 1878 Santana committed suicide by jumping out of the prison hospital window, because he would not die or live his entire life with the white man.
