This reporter went to the Lyon County Historical Museum to to get information on Emporia’s history. I interviewed Lisa Soller who works there and she provided some very interesting information.
Did you know that Emporia is the real hometown of Veterans Day? I was surprised because there were other towns trying to claim Veteran's day. She also told me that not many town’s celebrates Veterans Day like Emporia. Emporia Kansas seems to respect Veterans Day more than other towns. Here are some more cool fact about Emporia that you may not be aware of.
Did you know that Emporia …
was originally a train stop until they tore the train station down.
Was originally part of Breckinridge county. It was renamed Lyon County in 1862 after Nathaniel Lyon who died during the Civil War.
And 3 years before Emporia was named in 1865 there were already people living here.
Emporia has two Carnegie Libraries which is very rare.
ESU was originally for Teachers and was named Kansas Normal School.
