CORONADO

Coronado was born into a wealthy family in 1510, in Spain. Spain sent him to go explore. The expedition team of Francisco Vázquez de Coronado is credited with discovery of the Grand Canyon and several other famous landmarks in the American Southwest while searching for the legendary Seven Golden Cities of Cíbola—which they never found.

The reason that I think that he took to exploration is that he heard stories of the Seven Golden Cities. He took with him Mendoza,335 spaniards and 1300 natives, and 4 monks, on his Journey to find the Seven Golden Cities.

This has to do with Kansas because Coronado started in Mexico and and went up through New Mexico and Texas and through the Panhandle of Oklahoma and ended his expedition in Kansas.

Lewis and Clark

The expedition was approved by president Thomas Jefferson after the Louisiana Purchase in 1803.Captain Meriwether Lewis and his close friend Second Lieutenant William Clark volunteered for the expedition. Lewis and Clark started on their journey on 1804 and were accompanied by a group of men. They later encountered a native by the name of Sacajawea (also spelled Sacagawea) and her infant son.

Later on Captain Meriwether Lewis ended up committing suicide and Second Lieutenant William Clark named his son after Captain Meriwether Lewis.

This is the route that Lewis and Clark took. You can see that they crossed the Missouri river which is at the top of our state. They were the first Americans to explore land to the west of the Mississippi river.
